How to Protect Your Pictures

I have been asked about this quite a few times. Here is how I protect my pictures from 'right clicking and saving'. I tried typing it so you could copy and paste it, but Blogger won't let me. It's being ridiculous. Sorry!!!

So go to this website: http://www.codelifter.com/main/javascript/norightclick1.html

and there is a little link above the box with the code that you can click to copy the code. Then
on your blog, go to layout and choose to create a new gadget. Choose an HTML/Java and paste the code in there. You can change the message to whatever you want from the default 'this function is disabled'.

DELETE the part that looks like this:

============================================================Script: Basic No-Right-Click ScriptFunctions: Blocks right-click on mouse and shows alert boxBrowsers: NS & IE 4.0 & later; degrades gracefullyAuthor: etLux============================================================
Put the following script in the head of your page:

Now, the tricky thing is, if you host through someone like flickr or photobucket, you have to make sure your pictures are marked as private, or else someone can click on your picture, go to the hosting site and download them there.

Good luck!! :) Sorry I am off the map but I have been swamped working on a project for the Downs Syndrome Association. Best project EVER!!!

Well, whenever I snag photos from a blog I just drag them to my desktop. I have only been to one blog that wouldn't allow you to do that, Tara Whitney. Do you know to prevent that? Does this sound hypocritical..? If so, I just want to prevent the creeps not your average Jo.

Ummmm NO! I had no idea you could even do that! Soooooooooo yeah. I don't know. Does it work on my family blog?

Found your blog by googling, "How to protect your photos on your blog." And your blog came up.

I used the link you gave and followed the instructions and it worked! Thank you. I have pics of my family and of other photographers that need protecting. I want to know how to get Internet Expl to say what yours says. Thanks and sorry this is so long.

Sorry to bother again. I posted on my blog the trick you posted on yours about protecting your pics.. A friend mentioned that someone can still left click to enlarge THEN save the picture. I tried it on mine and it worked! Do you have a trick to avoid that?
Thanks for you help..

Megan k., did you ever figure out how to prevent the left click option? I also have that problem.
Thanks,
Marisa C

To delete left-clicking, you have to delete the line of code that is the link to the picture by itself. It's the code that looks like < a href=... > and I also deleted the "< / a >" because that closes that line of code. Not sure if there's an easier way, but that's the only way I know.
Anyone know how to prevent dragging to desktop?

Hi Your comments have been most useful. However, i need to ask one more question - I have disabled the rt click effectively. however, if i double click on the picture itself it enlarges and allows me to copy image... Any ideas as to how I can prevent this?

Thanks in advance for your time and response

Thank you for all your comments, sorry it has taken me so long to respond.

I upload all my blog images to flickr before I put them on my blog. I set them to private, and that prevents people from being able to click on the picture itself to bring it up in a new window to save it. It just takes them to my flickr screen saying the picture is private.

As for dragging the image...I don't know how to prevent people from dragging onto their desktop. I personally can't do it (just puts a link to the private image on my desktop) but I have friends who can. I am sorry I don't know the secret for that!

I came to your blog trying to solve the same problem. When disableing javascript in your browser prefs you can right mouse click and save it again. Or just view the sourcecode and copy the link of the image directly to your browser address. I still hope HTML5 will fix this problem.
With watermark you know if it was copied from your website, if you find a copy somewhere else. But that doesnot really help. Even Adobe`s flash can be copied with some tools...

Joy Thank You for this post. Now I have another question. How did you get your blog to go full screen. If you look at mine it is very narrow. I'm not very good at blogging yet, but hope to continue trying. LOL. This is what my blog looks like. Maybe you can direct me to an area that will help.

Thanks for the info! Needed this one:) Although when you tried it twice, it will have an option to disable the warning. So what I did was give them a message "Please do not use for commercial properties...copyright...thank you for your consideration...". I guess, I'll be just hoping for their respect of my "property". LOL

I just wanted a small deterrent to make people think twice about lifting my photos. This worked like a charm!

Ok, so they can still click through and pilfer the full-sized image; but if this pop-up makes one person think twice, then it was worth it.

Thank you so much!

thank you for the wonderful tip...unfortunately, people can still drag an image to their desktop. But this is still a great deterrent!!!
